Guilt and Shame followed me around most of my life. The shame of having a child while unmarried. The guilt of leaving my son’s father and becoming a single mother. These are just two of the many reasons for the guilt and shame I carried most of my adult life. My conscious mind telling me that these outdated and limiting beliefs were not mine was not enough to overcome the truth; they lingered at my core.
Negative emotions like guilt and shame can have a significant negative impact on our lives, our health and well-being. Understanding how these emotions affect us can encourage us to make a conscious effort to shift away from these heavy emotions towards more positivity and growth.
Let’s start with what we already know.
They Emotionally Drain Us
Shame and guilt are emotionally draining. They consume a lot of mental and emotional energy, leaving us feeling exhausted and depleted. This emotional exhaustion can make it difficult to find joy, happiness, or even motivation in daily activities. Over time, this can lead to feelings of hopelessness and depression.
They Can Negatively Impact Our Relationships
When we are caught in the grip of shame and guilt, it becomes challenging to connect authentically with others. These emotions often lead to feelings of unworthiness, making it difficult to form healthy, supportive relationships. Shame and guilt can cause us to isolate, push others away, or behave in ways that damage our relationships, further lowering our vibration.
They Can have Physical Health Impacts
The mind-body connection means that our emotional state directly affects our physical health. Shame and guilt can lead to stress, which has numerous adverse effects on the body, such as weakened immune function, increased risk of chronic diseases, and higher levels of inflammation.
They Encourage Negative Thought Patterns

Shame can be an overall destructive emotion, leading to self-sabotage and procrastination. At its worst, it can result in withdrawal and a reduced ability to function effectively.
David R Hawkins in his work to understand the nature of human consciousness measured emotions on a vibrational scale. He found shame to be the lowest vibrational emotion, while guilt followed a close second. While his work is not scientifically validated yet, it is an explanation that explains a lot of what I have explained above. So by shedding these heavy and limiting emotions we can positively impact our lives in so many ways and raise our vibration into higher-level emotions like love, joy and peace.
Raising your Vibration
The general concept of “raising your vibration” has both science-based backing as well as a more spiritual and holistic perspective. Here’s a breakdown of what is scientifically verifiable:

The HeartMath Institute has conducted extensive research on the connection between emotions, heart rhythms, and overall health. They focus on “heart coherence,” a state where the heart, mind, and emotions are in harmonious alignment.
Studies have shown that positive emotions like appreciation, love, and compassion can increase Heart rate variability (HRV), promoting a state of heart coherence. Conversely, negative emotions such as anger, frustration, and anxiety can decrease HRV, leading to incoherent heart rhythms.
So while the pure concept of emotions having a vibrational frequency has not been scientifically verified it is an area gaining popularity as it resonates with so many of us.
What I will leave you with is practical solutions for overcoming dense and damaging emotions like guilt and shame.
Emotional Regulation: By managing our emotions and fostering positive states, we can directly influence our heart rhythms, leading to a state of coherence. This not only benefits our emotional health but also our physical health.
Self-Compassion: Practicing self-compassion is crucial. Something so many of my clients including myself have found difficult but acknowledge your mistakes and shortcomings without judging yourself is crucial. Treat yourself with the same kindness and understanding you would offer to a friend.
Forgiveness: Learn to forgive yourself and others. Holding onto past mistakes or keeps you bound to low-vibrational emotions. Forgiveness frees you from the past and allows you to move forward.
Mindfulness and Meditation: Practise mindfulness and meditation to become more aware of your emotional state. Both practices help you observe your thoughts and feelings without getting entangled in them, allowing you to let go of negativity.
Positive Affirmations: Replace negative self-talk with positive affirmations. Regularly remind yourself of your worth, potential, and capacity for growth. This helps reprogram your mind towards higher vibrational thoughts.
Gratitude Practice: Focusing on gratitude can shift your perspective from what is wrong to what is right in your life. Regularly acknowledging the positive aspects of your life can elevate your emotional state and raise your vibration.
Get Support: If it’s all too much get support from a therapist or coach who can help you work through the shame and guilt. Professional guidance can provide you with tools and strategies to release these emotions and move forward to a lighter brighter future.
